As the Aztecs conquered their surrounding neighbors, they required tribute from their subjects. Atlixca, in the northern state of Puebla, was a ceramic center known for vibrant red and black ware. The ceramic ware was hand-built, wheel-processed, and burnished. This graphite ware appealed to the senses and tastes of elite Aztecs.
