During the late Classic period, Nicaraguan, Costa Rican, and Panamanian ceramic styles influenced Mesoamerica. The baluster vase with a pedestal foot was a Costa Rican import. The carved abstract design of a feathered serpent, Quetzalcoatl, is pure Mesoamerican. (6)

During the Mesoamerican ballgame, ballplayers wore special equipment to protect themselves from injury and to help deflect and hit the ball. A rubber ball could be hit with a force that could easily maim or kill a player. (6)

During the Mesoamerican Middle Pre-Classic period, the Olmec culture of Veracruz, the Las Bocas Culture in Puebla, and the Tlatilco culture from the Valley of Mexico created unique ceramic vessels, figurines, and hollow sculptures. Hollow anthropomorphic figures, usually crawling or seated, appear as sexless "babies." Great care was lavished on many of these "babies," suggesting their cultural importance, which remains elusive to us. (6)

During the Preclassic period, hand-modeled human figures were produced in abundance. The vast majority are female fertility figures, but there are the occasional males, shamans, and ballplayers. (6)
